I’ve often been asked why Five Star Catering still offers a no charge tasting for our weddings and larger full service events, while most other caterers charge for this service. The answer is simple: We recognize that the quality of food is a huge determining factor in the overall success of your event and while we know that our food is exceptionally fresh and delicious, we want you to have peace of mind in knowing that you are hiring the Best! The tasting gives us one on one time to really explore your vision for the day- not only discussing the menu, but also reviewing the logistical details that are so important in making sure your event runs smoothly. Most couples come into the tasting feeling a little overwhelmed and unclear about how the event will flow and are so relieved that at the end of just an hour, they actually have the start of meaningful event plan.
So when should you schedule your no charge tasting? As soon as you have your venue and date and have received and reviewed a detailed Five Star proposal to make sure that we are at least in the ball park of what you are looking for, we welcome you to schedule a tasting. During our peak wedding season (May thru October), we offer tastings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and occasionally can swing a Monday or Friday). Although we realize that for many of you weekends work best, our event schedule doesn’t allow us to do tastings on Saturdays and Sundays during wedding season. I promise you it’s not because I am off relaxing at the beach with my family on the weekends (although that sounds good right now). It just wouldn’t be fair to our existing clients for me to be meeting with new clients instead of making sure their event goes smoothly and it’s important to me to meet personally with you for the tasting , not pawn you off to a sales team. (If you think about it, you wouldn’t really want to hire a wedding caterer who had their weekends wide open for tastings in the middle of summer — it’s a good sign that we are busy and when it comes to your wedding day, you can be sure I will be focused on your event). We do offer evening appointments as late as 6:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays if you need to arrange something after work and we certainly can meet on Saturdays November thru the first part of April when it’s not so crazy.
What should you expect at the tasting? Before the tasting we ask that you send us a list of 5 items that you would like to taste. Our chef will prepare those especially for you. The tasting generally lasts about an hour, during which you will taste the items you requested and review logistical details such as timeline, rental needs, linen colors, china patterns, etc. No decisions are required during the tasting, and while you are welcome to bring your checkbook to reserve the date, there is no pressure to do so. Based on our conversation at the tasting, I will prepare a revised event plan/contract and from there you can decide whether you want to move forward with our services. Even once you book with us, everything other than the date can be changed up until 2 weeks before your event.
